Hi Alan, iMessage isn't dependent on the field into which you put the number in contacts. In fact, iMessage will work when you enter a phone number or email address manually. When you enter a phone number, Apple consults its server to find out if the number is registered for iMessage. if it is, and you've enabled iMessage, it will send that way.
