Hi Mary, As Aser pointed out, you can use these controls in the lock screen and I can verify that if you have a Bluetooth keyboard paired with the iPad you should be able to use them (F7=Previous and F9=Next). You can always make a copy of the old Audible app in your iTunes Media folder, then upgrade and if you are not happy you can delete the app from your iPad, copy the old version back into the Mobile Apps folder and sync, this should put the old version back. I still very much like the new app and I think it will just be a matter of a few weeks until Audible fixes some of these things and puts back some of the navigational options.
