It's not part of the rotor, it's a standalone gesture. It is the same in messages, and email. When in the screen with all your messages listed by sender, if you single-tap on a message thread, not opening, but highlighting it, then quickly flick up with one finger. This is where you can delete all of the above-mentioned types of messages.
