Hello Neal, First, it's good to see you here on the list. Many of us hadn't heard from you (meaning podcasts etc.) in quite a while.
Second, I have noticed that call quality has been greatly improved on both ends of the call on the iPhone 5 at least for me. I should add though that my carrier has what they call "HD Voice". I can tell you though that when I talk with a few different people, one using a basic cell phone on another carrier, one using an iPhone 5, and even one using an iPhone 5 on another carrier, the iPhone 5 on my carrier sounds best to me. As for the two on the other carrier, the iPhone 5 has the basic phone beat hands down regarding call quality. With the basic phone, I still notice distortion which isn't noticeable with the iPhone 5.
