Neal, I certainly know you weren't suggesting anything of the sort. As like
you, I'm always playing with mics, apps, etc to get the best possible sound out
of any device that I'm using at the time since I do audio for a living. I was
just making a couple points there to go along with what you'd said. As Neal
Augenstine who is the WTOP reporter & I have discussed many times in the past,
the end listener isn't as focused on those type things as those of us who get
obsessed with them are. Great discussion but I'd bet we're probably not
supposed to be having it on this here list...

Hi all, I was not meaning to suggest that the microphone on the iPhone was
not good. I can see that a lot of people would use it for a lot of good
recordings. I was just pointing out an app that, especially if you are
listening through professional speakers or wearing professional grade
headphones, does in fact sound very nice. The Apple processed microphone is
quite good as phone microphones go. My iTouch microphone sounds much better,
but likely that is because they have not tried to limit the frequency response
for phone calls. I have heard some crappie mikes in my day, and I certainly
don’t consider the iPhone 5 microphone anywhere close to these.

Me personally. I think the mic on the iDevices is very good. I've actually
recorded audio using it & we've gone to air with it. There is a news reporter
who works for WTOP radio out of Washington DC & that's all that he uses for all
of his on air broadcast recordings. I'll stop now as this discussion could go
on for ever if we let it.

    Hi Carol,

I listened to Neil’s audio samples and admit that the Fire 2 recording does
sound very good. The base is better and overall the sound is fuller and richer.

If the Fire 2 recording was used as a reference and given a 10 out of 10
for quality, I would say the List Recorder recording Neil made as a comparison
was at least an 8 or maybe even a 9 out of 10.

If you didn’t have both recordings side by side you would not even notice
the difference that much, at least I wouldn’t and another factor is what your
usage is. If you absolutely need or want the upmost in quality I could see how
you would want the Fire 2 app, if you want good quality recordings for taking
notes and so on I think for most people List Recorder or any other recording
app which does not circumvent Apple’s audio processing will be just fine. After
all, it’s not as if there were multiple discussion threads on Viphone where
people complain about the poor audio recording quality.

    Regards,

    Sieghard

I am interested in this app, but do have recorders already. What would I
gained from it? Other recordings really that much better? In addition, have you
tried any of the editing facilities to see if they work with VO? This would
interest me greatly.

      Hi.

I bought the fire 2 app long long ago. It was not accessible when. I
wrote to the developer and nothing happened. But I will really recommend this
app now.

Could someone add it to applevis.

      Best regards Annie.

It seems that i'd love the latter more because it sounds better of the
bass. Not sure whether the 2nd app that you use helps the sound has more bass.

Thanks for the audio pal. I've actually used this app to record with my
Audio-Technica ATR-2100 mic using the Camera Connector on my iPad Many & just
using the iPhone built in mic on my iPhone for use on air in my news & traffic
reporting. Works wonders. Used to record on my PC using audacity, no more. Use
this app.

Hi, the link below is to a very short demo of the totally different way
the microphone on the iPhone 5 can sound when you take away apple’s processing.
I don’t know other apps that do this, but Fire 2 definitely does. You have the
way to control the volume, compression, limiter and other audio features. There
is a setting in the app that allows you to completely turn off the microphone
processing done by apple.

First I use List Recorder to record the actual sound of the microphone
with all of apple’s audio processing turned on, which is the only way most apps
can do it.

Next, there is a recording made in Fire 2 with the processing turned
off.

        Enjoy.
