Hi there. In addition to the other messages giving the names of some Apple approved GPS receivers, there is a way you can get your typical GPS receiver to be seen by the iPhone. That is of course if you jailbreak. When you do this, there is a Bluetooth stack which you can install which enables the iPhone to recognize just about any other Bluetooth device. This includes GPS receivers which might only cost you 40 or $50. I am only passing along this information. Even though my phone is jailbroken I have not tried pairing it with atypical GPS receiver.
