Sure Debbie, terminal is a command line interface on the Mac which allows you to work with the Mac's operating system in many ways which are not possible from the desktop.
for what you want to do though, if the other lister who answered you is correct that Audacity will allow you to save mp3 files and it's free, then that would be the way to go! There's a way to do this in Terminal but if Audacity will do this then it will be a lot easier. Have a great day!
