Google has deprecated Exchange support, unfortunately. It'll work for paid Google Apps users, and it'll continue to work for all existing devices that are set up to use it. But if you haven't used it on your phone before then unfortunately you're out of luck and you'll have to set up IMAP, which does not include push.
There are several third party apps such as Ultimate Notifier and Push 4.0 and the native Gmail app that can push mail to you. It likely won't feel the same as having full Exchange support at hand, but IMAP has its advantages too.
