To recalibrate your LI battery, let it run all the way down and then charge it back up fully. You may need to do this two or three times. Note that this doesn't change the batteries capacity at all but just makes sure the meter is accurate.

How old is your phone? A LI battery will lose about 10% of it's capacity each year. Note that 10% is a minimum.

I'm sure Beto on the other list had a routine to try for this, something
about the battery measuring mechanism getting out of phase (my term) with
the actual battery level. There's always the usual about closing everything
and doing a full power down and seeing if it does more sense when put back
on, I think there's something to doing a full charge and discharge cycle
too; amazing how many never let them fully run down or even keep them on
charge unnecessarily.

We'd need to pop into the other list to get the fuller rundown off him on
this. But they're clues to play with for now.

Subject: ipod battery

Hi all, first I would like to thank you all for all the information that
you post here. I don't post because the questions I know the answers to
someone has already answered, but I learn allot by reading the post.
Now to my question I have the ipod 4th gen and it will only stay charged
for about 5 to 6 hours, I turned of wyfi and bluetooth but this hasn't
helped. How bad does the battery charging problem have to be before I will
be able to get my ipod replaced?
Thanks for your replies
