Hallo to Annie and others interested in further uses of the StandScan Pro.

Annie, you asked if the SSP could help in barcode reading. So long as the
items are small enough to place inside the box and yet be far enough distant
for the camera to focus, then yes!

As we all know, finding the code to scan it is the real problem for people
who have no usable sight. Also, one of the most challenging shapes for scanning
is a rounded one. Using RedLaser and the STandScan Pro, I am having great
success at easily finding the codes by slowly, and I do mean slowly, rolling
the bottle/tin across the base of the box starting at the front edge nearest me
and ending up at the furthest side. Sometimes it may take 2 goes, but it does
work for me. With boxes, subject to the caviat of size, it is easy to place a
box inside the box, move it around a little and then, if there is no ping of
success, try another side. Basically, it means that the phone being held still,
you are free to manipulate the item freely qwithout having to do a sort of
juggling act!

mind you, here in Ireland many of our databases are out of sync with the
international ones and so I was just assured that my plastic pot of Couscous
was, in fact, Toe nails! I really don't fancy it any more for some reason...

As for pots and creams etc, I have had good success with both their
barcodes and reading their info, so long as I retained the box they were
packaged in. So, maybe, for item recognition, a mix of barcode reading plus a
little prizmo.Text Grabber will give us what we need?

    Slainte, Sandy.
