for your first question, if you are using IMAP, just create a new folder and move messages from the inbox into it. IMAP means all email is on the server. Moving messages from the inbox allows for more messages to come in without needing to delete messages.
For your second question, it is more difficult, but not impossible by any means, to use Prizmo without the StandScan box.
