I have 3 separate devices backed up to iCloud all in the same 5Gb standard iCloud account. If you check under settings>iCloud>ManageStorage you will find the size of your current backup and also if you have any other older backups from different devices or incarnations of your current device.
If you've ensured the next backup is not going to be larger than the available space and you are still having an error, you can try deleting the current backup, and re-initiating the backup. Of course, prior to deleting the iCloud backup, I would recommend that you connect to your computer and get a up-to-date local backup. Also ensure your connected to wifi and a power source before trying to backup through iCloud.
