Hi Neal, The smaller the label, the smaller the bar code. We normally ship on the labels that come 32 / sheet. We can create codes on the labels that are 80 per sheet and you will, indeed, have to be closer to scan them. The codes that are 32 per sheet can be scanned from about 18 inches with an iPhone 5. The tiny labels are about 1/4 the size of the standard ones and will need to be scanned from about 6 inches.
It probably depends on what you want to label, but I've found that the larger ones work better for me.
