Depending on the grocery store, you can have a great time or a miserable
experience.

Many of the stores near where I live are now using bar coded shelf tags
that have UPCs on them. Safeway does and Target does too. Kroger does
not (at least not yet).

With the iPhone 5, I've found that I can be as much as 24 inches from the
shelfs and find what the items are. It is pretty cool!

This does not work on meat and other items that have local bar codes nor
does it work on loose produce, but for packaged goods, its a pretty good
solution.

The idea of scanning individual UPCs by turning the boxes and finding the
codes is, in my experience, very time consuming. The good thing is that
stores don't like to have all their stock turned around and the store
manager is very likely to take notice of me turning all the boxes over in
the baking department and dispatch someone to help me from customer
support, even if they weren't around when I first came in the store....
