I use the split tap whenever possible, almost as often as the double tap. This is a great example of where the split tap is better. Just hold your finger on the delete button, and touch the screen with another finger. It will announce what is being deleted as it is deleted, so, if need be, I can delete a several-digit number really quickly. When using the split tap, you must hold your first finger exactly over the icon, in this case the delete icon, or it won't work.
