I agree with Eric. The key in learning very different things is in
understanding concepts. One can take the concept of time and learn for
example stop watches, calendars, time zones, etc. To some extent The concept
of an operating system is to use it as a springboard to accomplishing
various tasks. For example, once you understand the concept of cut, copy,
paste, and or editing in a word processor, it doesn't matter whether one is
using MS word or WordPad. Again, there are many ways to get from Washington
to Florida including biking, bus, train, car, plane, etc. One need only
understand and work with what they have to accomplish their goal. Then
again, the person who insists on walking because its easy and free will have
lots of unnecessary difficulties IE: some solutions are better than others.
I will also add that for many of us, as blind individuals we've had to think
out of the box for many years, so developing techniques for accomplishing
tasks will not be all that much of a stretch. In other words, to some
extent, many of us who have applied him or herself are probably much more
creative than the average sighted person--in my opinion of course.

Subject: Re: Jumping in with using a Mac
I've always thought that was a bit of a dumb adage about not thinking of mac
os and expecting it to be like windows. I mean, if you can't use a computer
unless insert T reads the title bar and control option f1 just won't do,
you're head's probably not in the right place for learning a new operating
system/screen reader. If you are OK with insert T, control shift T, control
option f1, or whatever it is in orka, because you know you want to read the
title bar and that's the key that reads the title bar in the environment
you're using, you'll be fine.
If you understand what cut, copy, paste and undo are, then I don't see the
problem with thinking of them the same way in windows as in dos or linux or
mac OS. So it's command z, x, c, and V, not control all of the above and if
you're comfortable with the semantics, then I don't see why you shouldn't
carry the concept across.
I take different approaches depending on my audience. Some people need to
be kicked ruthlessly in the pants to break them out of the habit of pressing
insert T for the title bar and wining when they don't have an insert key.
other people can't use any synth other than elloquence and won't touch a new
platform unless they can have it speaking to them with reid at 166 wpm.
Insert epithet here.
I honestly think you're probably flexible enough raul, that you don't need
to throw out the knowledge and experience of 20 plus years or whatever it is
just so you don't try to treat mac os like windows.
Enjoy your new mac. I think you'll be very happy.
Best,

Hello. I hope this day finds you well. Starting on Monday, April 8 I will
join the MacWorld. I figure I have been an iOS user for about three years
so now it is time to start using a Mac. My first machine is a MacBook Pro
13 inch with 250 gig hard drive. I believe it is a mid or late 2010 model.
I cannot remember exactly what it is, however it does run Mountain lion
and it will give me a chance to get my feet wet without spending two or
$3000 upfront. It looks like I have some guides to read, however I do not
suspect it will be all that difficult. I like learning new things and like
the challenge of new operating systems. I know DOS, Linux, and windows
very well. So I suspect learning the Mac operating system will not be too
terrible. I already know about some of the things to watch out for. For
example I should not think of Mac OS like windows. Instead I will think of
Mac OS like Mac OS. I believe that thinking of an operating system in
terms of its own ways and itself will be the best way. This message has
nothing useful really in it other than me bragging.
Take care all.
