You may find the iPad mini more helpful.

It is rather big, in comparison to the phone, so you may not want to take it 
around with you, but you certainly could have a phone sim if you wish.

I would suggest you try to look in an Apple Store at one And see what you 
think. A friend of mine who is partially sighted does find the pads very useful 
indeed.
