Hi, I'm in the US and for me, red laser works great. True, it is very helpful to have a general idea where the barcode is on the product you are scanning.
On the red laser app, there are 5 buttons along the bottom. The button in the middle, almost just above the home button is scan. When the app scans the barcode, you'll hear a beep, then you can flick your finger like normal to read your results. Another app, I use sometimes is Consmr. Yes, that is how it is spelled, :). It also has a scan button just above home. Lately, I've been using fooducate, it has a barcode scanner as well. It tells you the product and all the nutrition info.
