It is hard to say. Mine said no service until it was configured even though it
did not need a SIMM.

Not being familiar with GSM usage I feel unqualified to answer this one.

Anyone else know what is going on?

there was not one of those diddle sticks in the box either. The phone reports
no service which does not mean no sim or does it?

When you look at it be aware that on the 5 the SIMM card tray is very very
flush with the edge of the phone. In fact, on mine I can not feel it at all.

The way it is ejected is by sticking a paper clip end or something small like
that into the very small hole next to the tray and pressing it firmly inward.
I do mean firmly too. I was afraid I was going to damage my phone it took so
much pressure.

Once you do this the tray will pop out and the card will be held there if it is
in the phone.

Good luck and have fun.
