The answer seems to be that you can do it by default, the keyboard is at the bottom to type on, and in the place that first says "what's on your mind", that is an open text area, even if it doesn't say so. just type, and it'll get rid of the bit about on your mind and put your text. I just did it, the first time I did a status from my newish 4S.
