My complaint with iTunes is that we're forced to use it for tasks where it's either overkill or inflexible. My own opinion is that I shouldn't have to use iTunes to copy information to my iPhone or organize my media library. As a media library manager and a device configuration tool, I don't think it's any better or worse than the alternatives out there. For example, it's better than the tool from Nokia I had to use to manage my Nokia phones. It doesn't seem any better or worse to me than Windows Media Player, and Winamp has a pretty non-standard interface with it's own accessibility issues.

I definitely don't think anyone should be attacked for voicing their opinion that iTunes is the best media management tool out there. On the other hand, I also wouldn't be critical of those people who don't want to use it or struggle with it. There are a few tools I use that I know are vilified by other blind people, which I don't always understand, but each person is free to reach their own opinions.

Hi there. In my experience people have disliked iTunes whether they are blind
or cited. I think in general iTunes is overbloated and tries to do too much for
a device which isn't personally needed. I can understand the philosophical
reasons why Apple decided to use iTunes to manage everything. Even though I
don't personally care for iTunes all that much, I have still learned to use it
because it is necessary with certain things. In my particular case I have other
music players besides my iPhone. So for this reason alone I do not want iTunes
to manage 100% of my music. I do use it to manage things like apps, backups,
and ring tones. I grudgingly use it to manage music as well. I do not use it
for anything else. I do not use iTunes to play music on the computer and just
leave it running. I have other apps like Winamp to do that instead. So I would
place myself somewhere in the middle of how much I like, dislike, use, or need
iTunes. I think that if I had to give it a phrase I would sa
y that iTunes for me is a necessary evil. I tell my clients who are new iPhone
users that they will have to learn iTunes at one point even if it is only to do
one task. I do not present to my clients my negative view of iTunes because I
want them to decide for themselves. I do not believe that iTunes is the worst
thing out there, but it is certainly not the best either.

I would agree with you. Unfortunately, several blind people on this list
repeatedly state a level of dislike of iTunes ranging from dislike to hatred. I
personally do not understand the feelings. I switched to iTunes when I
purchased my original iPhone 4 and learned to use it. After that, I found it
easier to use than WinAmp or Windows Media Player. The fact is, once we learn a
particular product, anything else is automatically much harder to use because
it is different. It doesn't matter if the new product is better or easier once
we learn it. The initial reaction is almost always extremely negative, and many
people are unable to get past that initial reaction.

Considering the above, I have learned, based on many negative attacks at me for
suggesting it, not to recommend, or even suggest, iTunes as the most reasonable
solution.

Again, for me, iTunes is one of the better, if not the best, media players for
both Windows and Mac, and I have a difficult time understanding why so many
blind people struggle with, or refuse to use, the program.

I think Ray should install iTunes on his computer then give AT&T tech support a

iDevice that it can quickly get overwhelming and incredibly frustrating.

You will not get service until an activated SIM card is installed. That said,
you will most likely need to activate the iPhone before you get coverage, even
if a SIM card is installed. The iPhone can either be activated using a computer
and iTunes, or during the set-up process on the phone. I do not know if you
need Wifi for the activation process as I have always used iTunes, or had it
activated at the carrier store. I find it quicker and easier to use iTunes as I
am also able to restore my back-up on to the new iPhone at the same time.
Besides, the process is much quicker on the computer compared with using iCloud
on the iPhone for restoration.

It is hard to say. Mine said no service until it was configured even though
it did not need a SIMM.

Not being familiar with GSM usage I feel unqualified to answer this one.

Anyone else know what is going on?

there was not one of those diddle sticks in the box either. The phone reports
no service which does not mean no sim or does it?

When you look at it be aware that on the 5 the SIMM card tray is very very
flush with the edge of the phone. In fact, on mine I can not feel it at all.

The way it is ejected is by sticking a paper clip end or something small like
that into the very small hole next to the tray and pressing it firmly inward.
I do mean firmly too. I was afraid I was going to damage my phone it took so
much pressure.

Once you do this the tray will pop out and the card will be held there if it is
in the phone.

Good luck and have fun.
