I've also found that from within the message conversations, you can select edit at the top right of the screen and individually mark those you want and then select forward at the bottom right of the screen to forward them to an email address. This does work but it can be time consuming if the thread has a lot of messages you want to keep.
I ultimately decided to pony up $20 and bought the MobileSyncBrowwser program which has both Apple and PC versions. This program allows you to extract messages, notes, phone call history, etc. from the iPhone's backup files on your PC to export to other formats on your computer. It works very nicely.
