Sandy, "location" refers to a value equal to a certain number of characters. I recall a discussion on the Kindle Forum several months back in which no one was sure what this digital value was. At any rate, it's Amazon's way of measuring one's reading place in a book. It is especially helpful with texts that do not display page numbers.
I don't know if there is any documentation beyond Michael Iams's free guide, but David Woodbridge has done a podcast on the subject. I'm sorry I'm not in a position to check the link now.
