Hi Ben,

Your automatic download preferences can be set separately on your
iPhone and on your computer. This is not the same as "syncing", and
your iTunes preferences may not be set up to automatically download
your new music purchases. On your iOS device, these options are
specified in "Settings" under "iTunes & App Stores". Navigate to the
"Automatic Downloads" heading and you'll find separate switches for
"Music", "Apps", and "Books". Setting any of these switches to "on"
means that new purchases in that category made from any of your iOS
devices or iTunes on your computer, will automatically download to
the iOS device you are modifying settings for. You might not want all
new purchases to automatically download to every deviceif you buy lots
of music that you store on your computer, but have more limited space
on your iPhone, or if you are a low vision reader with an iPad and an
iPhone, who prefers to always read books on the iPad. There is also a
switch to permit your device to use cellular data for Automatic
downloads and iTunes Match.

In iTunes on your Mac, you can similarly set your Automatic download
preferences for Music, Apps, and Books. Press Command+comma to bring
up your preferences menu, and navigate to the "Store" preferences
pane. The easy way to do this is by pressing Command+4 to use the
keyboard shortcut for this pane. Then, under Automatic downloads, make
sure the box for "Apps" is checked. You'll have to be logged into
your current iTunes account. The description under "Automatic
Downloads" on the "Store" pane of your preferences window will say
something like: "iTunes can automatically download purchases made on
other devices using <your Apple ID>. To change to a different
account, sign in to the iTunes Store.". Then there will be checkboxes
for "Music", "Apps", and "Books". I just press "return" (aka "Enter"
to store my changes and close the preferences window, but you can also
navigate to the "OK" button and press it.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
