Is this ability independent of carrier? Does it work with Verizon?

Richard is correct, there is a merge button.

after tapping on add call, you can either find the contact in your contact
list or manually type in the phone number with the keypad. It will call the
person and you will tap merge which is approximately half way down on the
left side of the screen. One thing to note is that you can not merge calls
while the phone is ringing. You have to wait until the phone is answered
before tapping merge.

Did you then merge the calls?
I have only done this once, but I vaguely remember a merge button to join
the calls together.
