Is this correct? When I open the messages app, the most recent thread is at the top. In order to reply to this thread, I VO space on the thread, then jump to the bottom of the thread with Option+Down Arrow. Quick Nav has to be on for this keystroke to work. Then I can VO left once to get into the edit field and start typing. I hope this is helpful, though I'm afraid I might have misunderstood your question.
