Have you tried restarting the iPhone? I've never had this issue. Also, have you updated to the latest iOS 6 version yet? That might help. I remember someone on this list saying that pressing the sleep button on the iPhone multiple times wasn't really a good thing. They said, if I remember correctly, that all this does is crash the Springboard, which I think is the technical name for your home screen. Anyhow, that's what I've heard jailbreakers call the home screen.
