I think it also helps a lot to ask a sighted person to take a look and explain to you where exactly the temperature is displayed. Furthermore, on some thermostats the screen goes to sleep and you have to push a button to wake it up, then the temperature may be displayed for a while before it goes off again. Knowing all of this really helps in understanding how to best take a picture.
