Thanks Patrick I'll turn read receipts on I didn't know about that little
trick. *smile*
I know IMessage automatically does this telling when it was read, but I am
sure read receipts is off so this is a nice automatic IMessage feature.
Yes Simon, facebook messenger on the IPhone is very much like msn,
particularly the fact you can switch between multiple conversations like you
used to be able to do in msn and which is harder on the facebook mobile
site.
But back to my original question, how do you know who is online and who
isn't?
If I see a friend or want to message someone I prefer to know if they are
online. While messaging them anyway and waiting for a reply is good, I
prefer if I want to chat to chat when they are online too and have a flowing
conversation, rather than one that is broken up over the course of a few
hours or even days considering we all lead such busy lives these days.
I dislike conversations this way because everything is disjointed and you
have to keep looking back to be reminded of what was said.

Hello Jed and all:

There are a couple of answers to this question.

First, if you are messaging someone who is online, FB messenger works like
the regular message on the iPhone if you have read receipts turned on. If
you send a message to someone and they read it, voiceover will say something
like "seen at" and then show a time.

Second, if you send a message to someone who is not online and you leave to
go do something like sleep or grab a snack . there is no way that I know of
that you are able to tell when they read the message. again, similar to the
messaging app on the iPhone.

Hopefully this proves useful to you. Please let us know.

Take good care and I wish you enough.

Patrick
