With Tap Tap See, here's what I've learned about cans. Most cans have the seem at about 9 o'clock. If you put the seem there, the picture on the can will then be at the 6 o'clock spot or directly in front of you.
It will require some playing with to find where your going to get the best results. For example, on my first try I got back, picture is can of chili. Useful but only if you always buy one kind such as chili with beans. If you buy chili with out beans then it is only 50 percent useful but then so is a good guess. By moving my iPhone nearer and farther away, I could find the sweet spot where it would identify a 15 ounce can correctly every time. The best results I got in my testing was with the daylight coming in over my shoulder and directly on the face of the can I was trying to identify. The camera lens is also in the top right corner on the back of the camera I found myself forgetting that then trying to take the shot as if I were shooting from the center of my iPhone. It helped when I had my fully sighted son look at the screen for me so that I would get an idea of the placement. He helped on a number of shots and found out about the seem of the label on the can most of the times is at the 9 o'clock spot so that the picture will be facing you. Where you live the cans may or may not be that way but it should serve as a starting point. In the past, I got descriptions that weren't very helpful. I tried it today and I first got responses that were not entirely helpful. For instance, I Was trying to identify some cans and it told me blue and yellow can. I took another picture and then it said canned food. So then I turned the can again and got something about nutritional facts, Then on the next try it told me what the can was. I figured out other cans after that pretty easily. So I'm rather happy that I finally got this app to work for me. S4 Goggles, I have not had the success that I have read everybody else has. I launched the program and it's in video Mode. I hold the phone over the product but received no response from it whatsoever. I'm pretty sure that the built-in voice is turned on I also tried with it turned off and had nothing being spoken to me. I tried tapping the flash button to see flash off or flash on to no success. Does anybody know if there's a podcast out there that can give me some tips? Am I just not being patient enough for a response? I tried waiting for several seconds and don't get anything from the app. Thank you in advance for any suggestions or tips.. I own both of those apps. I use talking Goggles to read what's on the screens of my washing machine and dryer. They both sit on pedestals and are front-loaders. When they are running, they can vibrate slightly which moves the screen very slightly and with a still camera shot it probably be much like trying to hold iPhone still wile trying to scan OCR. I've tried Tap Tap See a number of times and could not get it to read the screen at all but talking goggles in video mode can. Now on the other hand, I've spent many an hour trying to find stuff that Tap Tap See couldn't identify and failed. I have a wall clock in my living room. I thought for sure I got that sucker now. Not! Not only did Tap Tap See say that was a wall clock, but it said "picture is Spartan Wall Clock" I said to my sighted son what's a Spartan wall clock. He said, I don't know dad but let me look at the clock. Then he starts chuckling. Dad, Spartan is the brand name of the clock at the top of the face. So I moved to my Hammond Organ and thought, let me see it get this one right. "Picture is classic Hammond Organ" So, two different kinds of apps. Both are must-haves for any blind iPhone user. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sieghard Weitzel To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, June 26, 2013 11:08 PM Subject: RE: Tap Tap See couldn't read one thing so used face time to get it done Hi Teresa, You should try Talking Goggles in video mode if Tap Tap See doesn't work. I actually ofind Tap Tap See gave me some kind of identification like "Pudding" or something like that. However, when I used Talking Goggles it told me that it was vanilla pudding which was important since I have the exact same packaging but as chocolate pudding. /Talking Goggles will do amazing OCR which is something Tap Tap See doesn't do. There was one bottle of supplements it couldn't read. I have been wanting to try face time so did that with my daughter and she was able to tell me what it was. Also with Tap Tap See, I was able to identify an ATM on the street the other day while exploring the neighborhood. This iphone is becoming more and more useful every day. Thanks to every single person on this list. You are encouraging and inspiring and enlightening as well. Take good care, Teresa -- Challenge is a dragon with a gift in its mouth.
