Hi Marcus,

I haven't tried the Guardian App for a while, but there are accessibility
issues if you try to navigate by swiping left and right. Here's what I found
when I downloaded the latest version of the Guardian for iPhone app on my
iPhone 5. What is really weird is that I was able to get VoiceOver working
again by using the "Share" button double tapping on the the "Mail" button that
had focus, and then canceling without saving the draft. After that, everything
I tried in the Guardian App worked correctly. This is so weird that I tried
removing the app a few times from the App Switcher and starting it up from
scratch. Each time I started I couldn't navigate anywhere or get VoiceOver to
read things by flicking -- only by touching the relevant sections of the
screen. I'd hear "Guardian, Search button" and when I tried to swipe I'd get
the funk sound that you hear when VoiceOver can't navigate anywhere.

Here's what worked for me:
1. Touch your finger to the top center of the screen, just below the time on
the status menu bar, and run your finger vertically down the screen.

2. Stop when focus is on any of the story entries (e.g., the first top story)
and double tap. You'll hear the title of the story announced as heading level
1, but you still won't be able to navigate by swiping.

3. Touch the "Share" button at the bottom left corner of the screen and double
tap it. You can navigate there by touching the home button at the bottom of
the screen and moving your finger up slightly until you hear either "Decrease
font size, button" or "button". Then start moving your finger to the left to
reach the "Share" button in the bottom left corner of the screen. If you're
practiced at the spatial relation of the iPhone screen buttons you may be able
to move to this button directly, using the left edge of your case as a guide,
for example.

4. When you double tap the "Share" button, focus will be on the "Mail" button.
Double tap that "Mail" button. A mail message will come up, and focus will be
on the "Cancel" button. Just double tap on the "Cancel" button, and double tap
again on the "Delete Draft" button that will get the default focus.

5. At this point you should just be able to use a two finger flick up to read
the whole article (which you couldn't do before), and double tap the back
button in the top left corner to return to home screen, where all the normal
gestures appear to work.

I haven't the slightest idea why this works, but I've tried this at least four
times, and it gets normal VoiceOver gestures working for me each time. I was
trying to adjust the font size buttons at the bottom of the page to check
whether that affected the article's readability, and I hit the "Share" button
and tried to get out. I was really surprised when everything started working
for me. I expected that navigating to the article list section by touch
(vertical stroke down on the screen), might let me navigate with gestures, but
that didn't happen.

Can you try this and report whether it works for you? I'm running the latest
version of iOS 6 on the iPhone 5.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I was originally going to suggest the workaround of touching your finger to the
top center of the screen and running it vertically down to hear items
announced. However, that's still a pain, because although I can access the
articles that way, I sill can't "read all" with a two-finger flick up after
getting to the articles -- I have to touch the parts of the screen that I want
to read.

However, when I selected an article and touched the "Share" button at the
bottom left corner of the screen and double tapped

You can use a workaround to access content: instead of swiping to the items,
touch your finger to the top center of the screen, just below the time on the
status bar, and move it vertically downwards to hear the items announced. For
example, depending on whether you are slightly to the left or right of center,
you will first hear VoiceOver announce either "Search" button or "Settings"
button, then "Top stories updated seconds ago" followed by a summary of three
of the top stories, followed by "Multimedia" and then "Sport".

When focus is anywhere in this list of items, you can do a three finger swipe
up to move to the next page, and hear VoiceOver say "rows 7 to 14 of 30".
(Note that I have the U.S. edition checked in my settings, so my examples may
differ slightly from what you hear.)

To get to the detailed listing of "Top stories", "Multimedia", "Sports", or any
other item, double tap on that item. Again, stroke down vertically through the
center of the screen to hear the entries announced, and do a three finger swipe
up to move to the next page. I basically can't get any of the automatic
reading done with gestures
