I'm not sure if I'm the Chris you're referring to or not, but I don't do
anything special to sync my Google Calendar. When I set up my Gmail
account on the phone, I clicked calendar and notes in addition to mail.
After that, they just stay synced.
If you don't have a Gmail account set up yet, you can just go into
Settings -> Mail, Calendar, Contacts and create one. You'll be able to
turn on mail, calendar and/or notes. If you already have one set up, you
can go to the same place, click on that account and enable Calendar.
