I'm not sure, but you may need quick nav on for these keys to work. I
think quick nav is toggled on and off by pressing the left and right
arrow keys at the same time.

To the second part of your question, you can hit the up or down
arrow. It
should say delete.
Then a one finger double tap will activate it.
A one finger double tap is either the VO keys and space bar, or the
up and
down arrows at the same time
