I heard back from Fleksy Support about why users were forced to upgrade to version 1.8 if they wanted to continue using the app. Here are the critical portions of their reply which explain their decision:
There was a critical error in Fleksy's core engine, that materialized after version 1.7.2 left our labs and reached the AppStore. Essentially, Fleksy was very likely to stop predicting after it's one year anniversary. Think of it as our own version of the Y2K bug. To mitigate the damage, we enforced the update mechanism. The error is completely resolved with version 1.8 and Fleksy will continue function like normal and understand what you mean to type. It will also do so faster, much more accurately and with more stability. Rest assured, we will not be using this update method for anything less critical. It's good to know why they took this approach with the upgrade when not doing so with previous upgrades.
