Hi Rebecca,

As a college student, your Disabled Students Services department should be
able to produce the necessary textbooks in an accessible format. This is
mandatory by law in the US. You will want to familiarize yourself with your
rights as a disabled student as, depending on the budget of your college's
disabled student's program, they may try to avoid like the plague spending
the necessary costs to produce the material. You will want to inform your
disabled student services as quickly as possible about the books you will be
needing in the upcoming semester. Right after picking out my classes for the
upcoming semester, I made it a habit to send my university disabled services
a list of the required textbooks so that they could start working on making
them accessible. College was very stressful for me as I attended in a time
where there were few blind students in my area, so I took the brunt of all
struggles to educate administrators to comply. I had a tough tightrope to
walk as I needed to be friendly so that they gladly help me accomplish my
goal, but I also had to be stern in an effort to insure they did not try to
avoid their responsibilities. In other words, there were tons of meetings
with my counselor and administrators. (Smile). Ask your disabled student's
services office if they have a manual or pamphlet of some sort describing
the types of services they offer blind students in terms of access to course
content, testing, and accessibility. You might also look for a university
webpage that contains a description of their responsibilities (This webpage
search can possibly prevent bad blood between you and disabled services).
The more you learn your rights the less likely you are to be denied
essential services. There were a couple of blind students attending my
university who didn't really want to make waves with the department, they
were there before I arrived, and they were still there after I left. In my
opinion, the younger population of blind college students owes quite a debt
of gratitude to many older college graduates on these lists as they were the
pioneers in the education system who paved the way.
