Hi all, I realize the following may seem simplistic and probably unnecessary to the experts around here, but I just discovered a very simple and easy way of interacting with the default IOS calculator.
My previous frustration was one of finding the numbers then double tapping them to enter them into the calculation buffer. This, to me, took lots of time and resulted in accidental entry of wrong numbers. Swiping to access the numbers and symbols was out of the question because this took much longer than latter method. This default procedure was so frustrating to me that I installed to no effect many calculators in an effort to try to obtain the fastest number entry I could find. After experimenting a bit, I have just discovered that if I simply switch to standard typing and use my middle finger to enter numbers and the basic mathematical operations, my speed picked up dramatically. I will bet that this method is on par with sighted users. Here's how I do it! Let's multiply 951 X 357. Note: the following presupposes the user is right handed, but a left handed IOS user should have no problem at all. 1. Use the rotor gesture to access "Typing mode." 2. Swipe down and select "Standard typing." 3. Use the rotor to switch to another setting such as "Character." This will prevent undesired results in the event you swipe up or down. 4. Use your right middle finger to locate "Clear" to clear the screen (the clear button is above the number 7). While your finger is on the clear button, use your right ring finger to split tap twice. After split tapping twice without lifting your right middle finger, you should hear "0." This step insures the buffer is clear for any subsequent calculations. 5. Use your right middle finger to locate #9 and do not lift your finger. Now use your right index finger to tap anywhere on the screen. You have just entered this number, and you should hear audio confirmation via number repeated back to you. 6. Without lifting your right middle finger finger off of the screen, locate the #5 and split tap with either index finger or ring finger. You have just entered 5 into the buffer. The finger you use to complete the split tap is not important because the #5 is near the center of the number Pad, so you have plenty of room on either side of your middle finger. You should hear an audio confirmation that you have entered the number 5. 7. Without lifting your middle finger off of the screen, move your right middle finger to the location of the #1. Split tap using your right ring finger. the number 1 has now been entered into the buffer. Note: Notice there was no room to use your index finger to complete the split tap when you selected the number 1. This is why it is important you get into the habit of using your middle finger to locate each number as you will have a choice of split tapping with either your index finger or your ring finger. 8. With your right middle finger still placed on the surface of the screen, slide your finger over to the multiplication sign (It is above the subtraction symbol at extreme right of the screen). Now use your right index finger to split tap. You should hear "Multiply selected." 9. Without lifting your right middle finger off of the screen, repeat the process of finding the next 3 numbers, split tapping on each number as you go along until you have entered 357. 10. Once again, without lifting your right middle finger, slide over to the = sign which is located at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Use your right index finger to split tap. You should hear the solution to your calculation. 11. To continue practicing, repeat step 4 to clear the calculator's buffer. You will find that after just a few minutes of practice, your right middle finger will default to your calculator entry finger. I know, I know, that was probably described in an unnecessarily wordy manner, but I want to rule out any possibility of error with the new user of the calculator when using this procedure. :) Once this simple process has been mastered, calculations can be entered very, very quickly and efficiently. When closing the calculator you will want to set your rotor back to "Touch typing" if that was how you had your keyboard entry set. Though I did find that this procedure also works quite nicely when typing into any other edit field, so I simply left my iPod on the standard keyboard setting. If this proves to be beneficial in my everyday use, I can't wait to install some of the more complex scientific calculators out there. :) Joseph -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VIPhone" Google Group.
