Hello Hank,

I hereby correct you *smile*. Just because they didn't mention the
unsubsidized price and the fact you could buy a 5C off contract doesn't mean
you can't because I can assure you that you can.
I am not sure how this will be handled in the States where often unlocked
devices at full price were only available several weeks or even a couple of
months after you were able to buy them on contract, but here in Canada and
in most other countries you were always able to buy any iPhone at least
since the iPhone 4 which is when I started using iPhones on the launch day
at full price and unlocked.
When I listened to the Twit TV special about the Apple event Leo Laport also
mentioned the obvious omition of what any of the iPhones, 5C and 5S, would
sell for at full price. It is not hard to guess that the 5S will be the same
as always, $650, $750 and $850, respectively, for the 16, 32 and 64 Gig
version. If this is correct and the pattern holds true, then my guess is
that based on the contract price of $199 the 5C 32 Gig would be also $650 or
maybe $599 and the 16 Gig would be $550 or $499.
The 4S which is only offered in 8 Gb will in my thinking be $350 or $399.

I think this is a big disappointment for many who were hoping the 5C would
come in at under $450 or even under $400. Of course it also is clearly not
as tuned down a phone as some expected, I heard it might only have the A5
processor and possibly only a 5 MP camera and other relatively low-end
features, sort of a mix between an iPhone 4 and 4S and not basically the
exact same as an iPhone 5 with plastic case.

I think Apple is making increasingly large profits on these phones. Consider
the $100 more you have to pay for going from a 16 Gig to a 32 Gig and from a
32 Gig to a 64 Gig. The only difference is the size of the flash memory chip
and if you follow technology somewhat you probably know how cheap storage is
these days. Even high-end flash storage is not expensive and certainly going
from 16 Gig to 64 Gig does not really justify a $200 price jump. Apple must
be making huge profits here. I don't necessarily begrudge them that, they
are smart and still know how to sell a smartphone like nobody else (or a
tablet for that matter), but I really do hope that maybe next year or in 2
years they can once again awe the world with something absolutely super
cool, at least then I know the hard-earned Dollars I spend on buying a new
iPhone are at least going to some degree to R&D and cool innovation.

Regards,
Sieghard
