In iOS 6, audio-related apps are only allowed to run in the background for quite a short time. So if you run the app and then switch to another app, Downcast can keep going for a bit, fetching your podcasts and updating your feeds. But if you don't switch back from time to time, it's eventually going to time out and stop doing that. They implemented the location awareness feature to get around this.
