Yes, standard Apple warranty is 1 year. You can also buy Apple Care for $79
and it gives you 2 years of free phone support and it also extends your 1
year warranty by another year to 2 years. A third benefit of Apple Care is
that you are covered for up to 2 accidental damages to your device and all
you have to pay is another $79 to get your device repaired or replaced. So,
if you end up dropping your phone in the toilet or completely destroy it in
another way within those first 2 years, you will get a new phone for $79.
Apple Care is also transferrable which means that if you buy a device and
sell it after 1 year, the new owner will have another year of warranty left.

 

There is also the insurance from SquareTrade which costs about the same, but
it also covers you if you Jailbreak your phone which is not the case with
Apple Care. But if you don't plan to Jailbreak I don't think there is a lot
of reason to go with SquareTrade rather than Apple Care.

 

I purchased Apple Care when I got my iPhone 4S almost 2 years ago. Last
March (the phone was almost a year and a half old) my camera suddenly didn't
take clear pictures anymore which I noticed when I suddenly could not get
Digit-Eyes to scan a single barcode any more. I asked one of my employees to
try and he said the image was totally blurry. I did first do a factory
restore and made sure the lense was clean, but when this didn't help I
called Apple and in less than 10 minutes a new phone was on its way to me.
When it arrive 3 or 4 days later I wiped my old phone to get all my stuff
off it, restored the backup to my new phone and send my old one back to
Apple in the box the new one came in and with the return label provided.
This entire transaction did not cost me a single Cent and I was glad I had
bought Apple Care because otherwise I would have been out of warranty and
responsible to buy a new phone or simply not have the use of the camera any
longer.
