Hello Rob, CHRIS is correct that you need to tap on new note. Once this screen opens, there will be 2 edit fields. The first one is to place a title in for your note. Under that, there will be another text field. That's where you will place the note. Also in settings, you can change the font type face and size. My font is set to Ariel at 12 pt. HTH.
