You can also use the Actions item in the roter, which should be the default when you enter the App Switcher. Just flick up or down to get to the close option and then double tap the item you want to close. The roter will stay on the close action, so you can just keep double tapping any item you want to close. This is similar to the IOS 6 method, except you do a flick up or down instead of a double tap and hold. The three finger swipe up also obviously works.
