Hi, These are alternative characters that are also available for the particular letter that you've selected. this makes it easier, for example, to type a letter "e" with an accent mark, or some other character associated with the "e" key. Before, you had to go into another whole screen of things by choosing the button next to the space bar.
As far as I know, you can't turn this feature off, just don't hold your finger so long on the letter.
