Hi all,

I just wanted to describe my rather unfortunate experience syncing podcast
subscriptions and settings with my Apple ID, which is a new feature in the
latest release of iTunes. I thought this would be a great way to wirelessly
manage podcasts between my iPhone and my PC.

On my iPhone, I only keep unplayed episodes but on my PC, I have chosen to
keep everything and I have quite an extensive archive of podcast episodes. I
was subscribed to about ten podcasts in iTunes, but only four on my iPhone.
Since iOS devices have been able to sync podcast subscriptions and settings
with your Apple ID for some time now, the feature was already enabled on my
iPhone.

After turning on the setting in iTunes, to my horror, iTunes wiped out all
my podcasts except the four that were already setup on my iPhone. Not only
that, it deleted the actual files themselves and bypassed the recycle bin
completely. I couldn't quite believe this had happened, but assumed that the
synchronization had gone amiss. To be clear, all references to the podcasts
including the subscription itself were deleted from my iTunes library.

I dug out a backup that had been made a few days ago and re-added all the
podcast episodes. I now see that iTunes is again deleting quite a few of the
episodes that I just re-added, and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or
reason to which ones it is deleting and which it is accepting. I can only
assume it is deleting episodes that it can't find reference to in my sync
profile, but I have no idea.

A quick Google reveals plenty of others are having this issue. For example,
see here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23041312#23041312

If anyone else has turned on podcast sync, I'd recommend checking your
iTunes media folder to check whether any episodes were deleted that you
still want. My experiences with iTunes have been generally positive, but
this is definitely the strangest thing that has happened to me so far in
iTunes.
