Hi, I would unload everything from app switcher then restart your device. I am using an iPod Touch 5th gen, and I just launched an NLS book then used the up and down buttons on the side of my iPod to quickly lower volume--no problems. I also raised and lowered the tempo using the NLS app, and my iPod responded very quickly.
