I noticed that if my phone is locked to the portret mode, the face detection
works only when picture is taken as a portret. It doesn't work if I take
pictures in landscape.

With the improved camera in the iPhone 4s, is face detection working for
you? I personally never got it to work on my iPhone 4 despite trying
several times all to no avail, both with and without lighting etc.
