Hello Hannah, The deciding factor is whether they use iOS. iMessage and Facetime only works from one iOS device to another iOS device and your friends whom you are trying to send messages have to make sure they have iMessage enabled and their email address registered. Normally if somebody has an iPhone their mobile number and Apple ID email address is automatically registered and for iPad and iPod Touch users their Apple Id email is registered. You can also register additional email addresses in Settings and Messages.
Lastly, iMessage only works if both people are connected to the internet either via WiFi or cellular data.
