I've seen people forward messages from their state libraries claiming that BARD will be shutting down tomorrow, if the government shuts down. In Googling around, I wasn't able to find an official statement from NLS though.

Unless some compromise is reached today, government services will be curtailed starting tomorrow. I doubt many NLS or BARD positions will be considered essential government positions, so I think BARD services will be effected.

I think it's clear that new books won't be posted to the BARD web site during the shutdown.

The servers may be left on, but they may also be shut down to save energy or ensure against any issues arriving from the lack of system administration monitoring. Even if they are left on, they probably will not be serviced if there are any issues.

You will still be able to listen to any books you've downloaded to your PC, book reader or iPhone.

Well this thread has gotten out of hand. As a longtime subscriber to
this list, I am offended by political commentary of any kind taking up
space on this list.

My questions are:

1.Is Bard really shutting down? Is this rumor, or has a fact been verified?

2.If the answers above are proven to be yes, does this mean as an end
user as of tomorrow 10/1/13 that I will no longer be able to read
currently downloaded books? Or does it mean, if true, that current books
are not affected, and future downloads would be restricted?

Thank You
