Hi again, OK, sorry, I totally overlooked that you said you were trying to setup gmail using exchange. Google has done away with exchange support and you will have to to use the proper "Gmail" account type. This will use IMAP for mail and where before iOS 7 you had to set up a separate CardDAV account for Google Contacts, you can now simply enable both mail and contacts and it will work.
If you want to know more about this, just google "exchange support for gmail" or something like that and you will find lots of information.
