and I did grab a few extra books on Monday, both to my iPhone and my PC,
to make sure I have enough books to get me through the shutdown. I for
one, did appreciate the heads up.

Hi,
Its hard to say it was for nothing. I mean, NLS did issue the statement. It’s
not like some blind person just made it all up. lol. Now, I didn’t treat it
like the sky was falling, and I now needed to download the entire catalog but,
I think the warning, and expectation of no service was valid.

It's interesting that again the blind community feaks out for nothing.
As of this morning the sight worked just fine.

I had to go to a meeting last night, fully intending on coming home and
downloading some books that I had found in the new listings.
Well I forgot to do that, so when I got up this morning I thought, well
that's that, I can't get those books.
But I was able to get them.
So I wonder did we get a reprieve or since it was yesterday's books is
that why I could get them. At any rate I am glad I was successful in
getting the ones I wanted.

This is a major reason why a single app on an iPhone (like BARD) is such a
not so nice idea. In order to read any books from the NLS, the app
authenticates with the NLS servers. If they are shut down, so is your
ability to read. THis is why I prefer the use of both my Braille Sense and
my Victor Reader Stream. With these and a few ram sticks full of books, I
can be set for just about any contingency.

I did a little research and copied this information directly from the
home page of the Library of Congress. If you have downloaded books
onto your IDevice you should be fine but if they are in your wish list
you probably won't be able to access them.
News from the Library of Congress
September 27, 2013
Advisory: Possible Federal Shutdown
In the event of a temporary shutdown of the federal government,
beginning Tuesday, October 1, all Library of Congress buildings will
close to the public and researchers. All public events will be
cancelled and web sites will be inaccessible.
