Double tap the In box back button at the top of the screen. this will
take you back to the list of messages in your in box. The Mail app
defaults to your last view when you start it up, so if you were in a
message when you left it, you'll be in a message when you return. ditto
if you're in the in box.

messages I’m put into the first message and asked if I want to read or
dismiss. If I tap on dismiss, then I’m taken to the next unread message

subject line and then delete a message before opening it. Is there a
setting I should change in order to not have my new emails opened
